Take a Look at What We Have in Store

New Hamburg is a pageant of a wide variety of tree species, and some of them are spectacular! A brief walk along three downtown streets will take you past 7 varieties of maple, 3 varieties of spruce, 2 of oak, 2 of willow, 2 of birch and many more. Come on a one-hour walk to see how many you already know.

Meet in the Kirkpatrick parking lot at 122 Wilmot Street by the gazebo (near the New Hamburg Dam).

We won’t go if it’s raining.

September 30 is National Day for Truth and Reconcilation. We invite you to wear an orange shirt in honour of the students of Residential Schools, and to reflect on the connection between environmental issues, reconciliation and justice.

Let’s Tree Wilmot’s celebrates its accomplishments and volunteers. 

“Volunteer Led Ecological Restoration” will be discussed by  Mike Schwarz, a volunteer with Trees for Woolwich and founder of Earthscape.  We have the Mike Schout Wetlands Preserve. Woolwich Township has The Habitats or Elmira Nature Reserve (67 acres) with 5 ecosystems: Oak savanna, tallgrass prairie, oak-beech-yellow birch forest, succession forest, and wetlands. It is an amazing project. 
 
Join us for this free meeting, refreshments, and celebration.

WEDNESDAY WALKS IN WILMOT’S

We explored several trails to enjoy beauty and nature in Wilmot Township.

We found the rare rock elm in Schmidt Woods, learned about the many tree species and some of the plants on the forest floor.

WORKSHOPS AND MORE.

Pruning Workshop with Mike Yost

Saturday, March 21st, 1:00-3:00 pm  Mannheim CC., 1467 Mannheim Road. 

All aspects of tree pruning – equipment, safety, when & how to prune various tree species to be covered (no fruit trees).

The workshop will begin with an indoor classroom session and then move outdoors with a walk around the Community Center to view the good, the bad, and the ugly of tree pruning decisions.

Nithview Hill/Floodplain – 645 trees
Perth Street – 171 trees/shrubs wetland
Scott Park – 118 trees
Sir Adam Beck Public School – 43 trees
New Dundee Community Park – 46 trees
Petersburg Community Park – 88 trees/shrubs

Highlights:

  • A total of 1,122 trees planted = 370 Volunteer planting hours
  • 1500+ hours of volunteer time planning, maintaining and educating about Wilmot’s trees
  • Since 2020 – 5,862 trees planted = to 30 acres of future forest canopy
  • LTW Water Warriors watered 2600 trees with total of 269 volunteer hours. (Trees watered for 2 years.)
  • Seedling bed is now at 1242 trees. 300 trees were transplanted at Nithview Floodplain planting.
  • Fall Celebration, Tuesday Nov. 11, Christine Earnshaw of Tree Canada spoke on our national tree program Growing Greener Communities: Perspectives from Tree Canada
  • LTW collects tree seeds for Reep Green Solution’s hoop greenhouse ,and shared with Trees for Woolwich and ReLeaf Stratford.
  • We held Tree Pruning Workshop, 7 Wednesday Walks in Wilmot Wonderful Woods with Louis and a booth at Canada Day for attendees to be artists drawing trees.
  • LTW Fundraising – We successfully received Federation of Canadian Municipalities – Growing Canada’s Community Canopies grant. Thank you to Wilmot Rotary, Garden Wilmot and many individuals to contribute matching funds.

2024 Tree Planting: 

  • 436 hours by volunteers planting trees

  • 1500+ hours of volunteer time planning, maintaining and educating about Wilmot’s trees

Sites Planted: 

  • New Hamburg: 904 trees – Nithview Hill/Floodplain
    159 trees – Riverside Park
    132 trees – Kirkpatrick Park

  • Baden:
    44 trees – Foundry Park
    64 trees – Fairmount Cemetery
    41 trees – Haysville Community Centre

  • A total of 1344 native trees planted!

Highlights:

  • Since 2020, 4,639 trees planted and 14 Acres of habitat restoration created (5 acres in 2024).
  • Every settlement in Wilmot Township has had trees planted in their parks.
  • LTW Water Warriors watered 2636 trees by the end of 2024. (Trees watered for 2 years.)
  • Seedling bed contains 2000 trees. 300 trees were transplanted at Nithview Floodplain planting. Thank you to volunteers who planted 600 seedlings in the spring.
  • 3 Pruning Workshops, a June Coffee & Conversation, 9 Wednesday Walks in Wilmot’s Wonderful Woods with Louis Silcox were held. LTW participated in the Canada Day Celebration at Scott Park.
  • Doug Tallamy: Nature’s Best Hope was a sold-out event. Thank you to our co-sponsors: Earthscape Catalyst, rare Charitable Research Reserve, Nith Valley EcoBoosters, Reep Green Solutions, Township of Woolwich Environmental Enhancement Committee, & Wellesley Township Horticultural Society

• Planted 6 Silver Maple Plants with the Grade 4/5

Trees/Shrubs planted in 2023: 1601 Trees Planted since 2020: 3358

Seedling bed is now at 1670 seedling trees. Next year about 400 seedlings will be ready for transplanting.

Tree watering:
The Township has been watering newly planted trees and now LTW has a pickup truck with tank and pump to water trees planted in past two years.
